How JLPT reading works

Reading questions test whether you can find the information a passage actually states, not general knowledge. Read the passage once for the main idea, then use the question to scan for the sentence that answers it.

Passages grow longer and more abstract from N5 to N1: short notices and diaries at N5–N4, essays and explanations at N3–N2, and argumentative texts at N1.

Highlighted words show their reading and meaning when tapped, and every explanation can point to the sentence it comes from, so you learn how to find answers, not just what they are.

Reading Practice Tips

  • Read the passage first without looking at questions
  • Try to understand the main idea before focusing on details
  • Use the vocabulary list to help with unfamiliar words
  • Read the passage again before answering questions
  • Look for keywords in questions to locate answers
  • Practice regularly to improve reading speed and comprehension
