Question 1

What is JLPT and why should I take it?

Accepted Answer

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the most widely taken Japanese language certification for non-native speakers, run by the Japan Foundation overseas and by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES) in Japan. It has five levels, from N5 (basic) to N1 (advanced), and tests reading and listening; there is no speaking or writing section. People take it to show their level to employers and schools, for some visa and immigration points systems, or simply to mark progress. Employers and universities in Japan often ask for N2 or N1, but requirements vary, so check the specific job or programme. In Japan the test is held in early July and early December; many overseas cities hold it only once a year, so check your local host institution's schedule.

Question 2

What are the best books for JLPT preparation?

Accepted Answer

The best JLPT preparation books depend on your current level. For beginners (N5-N4), Genki I and II provide comprehensive foundations with clear English explanations, conversation practice, and cultural insights. For intermediate learners (N3-N2), Tobira offers challenging authentic materials and academic Japanese. For all levels, the Shin Kanzen Master series is highly regarded for focused JLPT exam preparation with separate volumes for grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, and kanji. Nihongo So-Matome provides condensed 6-week study plans perfect for quick review. Japanese From Zero! is excellent for complete beginners who want gradual kana introduction. Minna no Nihongo suits classroom learners preferring immersive Japanese-only instruction. Most successful students combine a comprehensive textbook with level-specific JLPT practice tests for optimal preparation.

Question 3

How long does it take to prepare for each JLPT level?

Accepted Answer

It depends heavily on your background, study habits and whether you already read kanji. The pre-2010 JLPT guidelines suggested roughly 150 study hours for the level now called N5, 300 for N4, 600 for N2 and 900 for N1; N3 was added in 2010 and sits between N4 and N2. The current JLPT publishes no official hour targets, and learners without a kanji background often need considerably more, especially for N2 and N1. Treat any hour figure as a rough guide: steady daily study usually beats occasional cramming, and a timed practice test is a better check of readiness than a count of hours.

Question 4

What is the difference between JLPT levels N1 through N5?

Accepted Answer

JLPT has five levels, from N5 (easiest) to N1 (hardest). N5 covers basic Japanese in familiar, slow situations; N4 basic everyday Japanese; N3 everyday Japanese at close to natural speed; N2 everyday Japanese plus a range of broader topics; and N1 Japanese used in a wide variety of circumstances. The JLPT does not publish official vocabulary or kanji lists for the current test. Commonly used estimates, carried over from the pre-2010 test specifications, are about 100 kanji and 800 words for N5, 300 kanji and 1,500 words for N4, roughly 650 kanji and 3,000–3,750 words for N3, 1,000 kanji and 6,000 words for N2, and 2,000 kanji and 10,000 words for N1. Every level tests language knowledge (vocabulary and grammar), reading and listening.

Question 5

How often is the JLPT exam offered and when should I register?

Accepted Answer

In Japan the JLPT is held twice a year, on the first Sunday of July and the first Sunday of December. Overseas, each country's host institution decides whether it runs one or both sessions and sets its own registration window, fee and procedure. In Japan, registration for the July test usually opens in spring and for the December test in late summer; overseas windows are often earlier and can close as soon as seats fill. Check the official JLPT site for your country as soon as you know which session you want.

Question 6

Can I skip JLPT levels or must I take them in order?

Accepted Answer

Yes. There are no prerequisites: you can register for any level without passing the ones below it. What matters is choosing a level you can realistically pass, because a failed attempt costs a registration fee and several months of waiting. A timed practice test or a placement check will tell you more than a textbook chapter count. If you need the certificate for a job, school or visa, find out which level is required and aim for that one.

Question 7

What is a passing score for JLPT and how is it calculated?

Accepted Answer

Every level is scored out of 180. The overall pass marks are 100 for N1, 90 for N2, 95 for N3, 90 for N4 and 80 for N5. You must also reach a minimum in each scored section. N1, N2 and N3 are scored in three sections (Language Knowledge, Reading and Listening, 0–60 each), with a minimum of 19 in each. N4 and N5 are scored in two sections: Language Knowledge and Reading combined (0–120, minimum 38) and Listening (0–60, minimum 19). Scores are scaled so that results are comparable across test dates, which is why they are not simple percentages of correct answers. Results arrive roughly two to three months after the test.
